A greener semiconductor industry

Article Abstract:

The effort of the semiconductor industry to reduce the amount of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) emissions is a good example of how an industry can act in an environmentally conscious manner in the absence of government regulation. Studies revealed that 70-90% of PCF emissions produced by the semiconductor industry were the result of the processes used to clean the chambers that are used to deposit chemical vapors onto the chips. Some of the more widely used approaches to reduce the amount of PFC emissions are to optimize chemical use and to use replacement chemicals that have lower global warming potentials.
