We can rebuild you

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the University of New Mexico's Intelligent Materials Laboratory headed by director Mohsen Shahinpoor are testing polymer gels that can be used as muscles for robots and, eventually, as replacements for human muscles. This is done by passing an electric current through the polymer gel, which induces contraction when it is immersed in an acid solution and expansion when it is immersed in an alkaline solution. The team is currently working on the concept of using artificial muscle to aid diseased hearts, in place of heart transplants.

Looking inside earth for life on Mars

Article Abstract:

Scientists are probing the vast and deep caves of America for the possible presence of microbial lifeforms which might bear analogous resemblance to Martian lifeforms. Exploration of the Lechuguilla cave reveals a community of unknown fungal strains that thrive in an environment very similar to that of prehistoric Mars. The striking similarity of the living conditions traces the possible close relationship with those that live beneath the surface of Mars.

Fishing for data

Article Abstract:

The Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics is a research project launched by marine scientists to determine the effects of climate change and other factors on marine populations. The effort is financially supported by the National Marine Fisheries Service, National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The project, which also involves fishermen, is expected to promote fishery preservation through sustainable fishing.
