A nonpharmacologic sleep protocol for hospitalized older patients

Article Abstract:

Nonpharmacologic sleep promoting services can reduce the use of sedatives and hypnotics in elderly hospital patients. At one hospital, nurses were instructed to give a back rub, a warm drink and relaxation tapes to patients who reported difficulty sleeping. A sedative or hypnotic would be given an hour later if the patient was still awake. This technique reduced the use of drugs from 54% to 31%. However, chronic sedative users were less likely to accept the nonpharmacologic protocol.

Curriculum recommendations for resident training in geriatrics interdisciplinary team care

Article Abstract:

Medical resident training curriculum recommendations related to geriatrics interdisciplinary team care are discussed. No one discipline can take care of all the needs of a geriatric patient. Primary care practitioners in internal medicine and family practice will be called on more and more to participate in geriatrics interdisciplinary team care in various settings and should have had experiences to ready them for that role.
