A randomized trial of weighted vest use in ambulatory older adults: strength, performance, and quality of life outcomes

Article Abstract:

Weighted vest use did not significantly improve lower extremity strength, physical performance or bone turnover markers in a clinical trial involving 62 men and women, with a mean age of 74 years. Vest use was tested at 3% and 5% of body weight, in an attempt to reduce risk of falls and hip fractures.

Hearing loss in community-dwelling older persons: national prevalence data and identification using simple questions

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the prevalence of hearing loss among community-dwelling older persons and to create a screening instrument for hearing-loss detection. Researchers examined a total of 2506 individuals between the ages of 55 and 74. The results indicated that hearing loss can be screened by using questions that relate to sociodemography and hearing characteristics.

Drinking habits among older persons: findings from the NHANES I Epidemiologic Followup Study (1982-84)

Article Abstract:

Drinking in old age may follow earlier life patterns. Data from national health surveys suggest that 60% of those people who drank even low amounts of alcohol in previous times continued to do so in old age. One fourth of all drinkers reported drinking on a daily basis. Heavier alcohol intake was found in younger people, men, and the more affluent. These higher alcohol intakes may represent substantial health risks.
