Pressure ulcers among patients admitted to home care

Article Abstract:

Prevalence of pressure ulcers has been investigated using cross-sectional survey methods in 41 agencies in 3,048 patients admitted to home care with attention to demographic and health characteristics associated. Substantial need exists for prevention and treatment. In the sample 9.12% had pressure injuries, 37.4% had more than one ulcer and 14.0% had 3 or more ulcers. About 30% of subjects were at risk for new ulcers. Interventions were underutilized and often used indiscriminately. Stages of worst ulcers are given by percentage.

A specialized home care intervention improves survival among older post-surgical cancer patients

Article Abstract:

A randomized controlled intervention study has been carried out to compare the length of survival of older post-surgical cancer patients who received a specialized hone care intervention from advanced practice nurses with that of patients who received usual follow-up care in an ambulatory setting. Potential predictors of survival were assessed in various ways. The first empirical study of post-surgical cancer patients to link a specialized home care intervention by advanced practice nurses with improved survival has produced some data, but more research is needed.
