Age and sex differences in strategies of coping and defense across the life span

Article Abstract:

Older adults use a combination of coping and defense strategies that include cognitive reinterpretation of situations by greater impulse control and positive perception of conflicting situations. Younger adults and adolescents tend to use aggressive strategies which show less impulse control and self-awareness, and immature psychological processes. Women use internalizing defense mechanisms more than men. The coping strategies of women incorporate the intra- and inter-personal aspects of conflicting situations.

Emotional and self-evaluative effects of social comparison information in later life: How are they moderated by collective self-esteem?

Article Abstract:

A study examined the way emotional and self-evaluative effects of social comparison in 162 community-dwelling older people were moderated by individual differences in their collective self-esteem (CSE), a trait reflecting valuing and identifying with reference groups. The findings contradicted the possibility that an adaptive advantage of high CSE might result from the tendency to identify strategically with upward comparison targets.

Performance in auditory and visual emotional stroop tasks: a comparison of older and younger adults

Article Abstract:

Older and Younger adults performed 2 version of an emotional stroop task. Results are discussed in terms of inhibitory cognitive processes, attention and theories of emotional development.
