A qualitative examination of the similarities and differences of elder abuse definitions among four groups: nursing home directors, nursing home employees, police chiefs and students

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the definitions of elder abuse provided by focus groups in the Commonwealth of Virginia. These focus groups included nursing home employees, students enrolled in upper-level sociology and criminal justice courses, nursing home directors and police chiefs. Standard thematic content analysis revealed significant differences in several areas including abuse type themes, crime centered themes, victim centered themes and general semantic themes.

Elder abuse in nursing homes: the theft of patients' possessions

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the theft of nursing home patients' property in nursing homes. The objective was to understand the nature of this type of abuse and to obtain theoretical explanations for it. Based on routine activities theory, there are reasons to expect that theft from nursing home patients is common and that nursing home employees are involved. Because of the scarcity of research done on the subject, further studies are recommended.
