Case mix controlled service use and expenditures in the social health maintenance organization demonstration

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the expenditures among the members of the social health maintenance organization (S HMO) and fee-for-service recipients reveals a higher expenditure for S HMOs of all health status classes. Elderplan offered services to the 'frail' and the 'acutely ill' and incurred low expenses in four of the six classes. High hospital and nursing home charges led to an increase in the expenditures of SHP. These factors imply the need for a better management of S HMO operations.
