Elder abuse in a land of tradition: the case of Israel's Arabs

Article Abstract:

It is commonly believed that traditional societies respect their elders and place a high value on their wisdom. However, rapid social changes in such groups are often unfavourable to the elderly, whose status may decline. A study designed to analyse the changing attitudes to the elderly in an Arab community in Israel shows that Arab elderly have a 2.5% incidence of abuse and neglect, with abuse patterns similar to those in the West. The findings support the theory that elder abuse is amplified by modernization.

Elder abuse in residential settings in Israel - myth or reality?

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the existence of elder abuse in residential care in Israel. A broad range of definition of abuse was utilized. Results indicated the existence of abuse in its classical form in a limited number of small private unlicensed facilities in the country. Findings also showed the existence of abuse in a broader definition carried out by nurses' aides.
