Decision-making capacity to execute a health care proxy: development and testing of guidelines

Article Abstract:

This article examines the ability of aged patients to make decisions on the need for health care treatments. Data show that 73% of the cognitively impaired older people showed sufficient capacity to make such decisions.

Quality of care for older persons at the dawn of the third millennium

Article Abstract:

Researchers, providers, insurers, and government agencies have played an instrumental role in improving and standardizing the quality of health care provided to older persons. The 2001 Institute of Medicine report 'Crossing the Quality Chasm', concludes that the entire system needs to be redesigned.

The six suggestions advanced by the expert panel, constituted by the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing, are presented. These aim at the amelioration of use of advanced practice nurses.
