The validity of the Minimum Data Set in measuring the cognitive impairment of persons admitted to nursing homes

Article Abstract:

Validity of Minimum Data Set Cognition Scale (MDS-COGS) use in measuring cognitive impairment of those admitted to nursing homes has been studied for the first time where the MDS was not completed by research-trained staff. A cross-sectional comparison with scales provided by the resident, a proxy person and nursing staff found that compared with other instruments, the MDS-COGS and the Cognitive Performance Scale (CPS) have moderate/similar validity for assessing cognitive impairment. The MDS-COGS is federally mandated for Medicare. The study had 1,939 subjects admitted to 59 homes.

Cognitive impairment in hip fracture patients: timing of detection and longitudinal follow-up

Article Abstract:

Research on hip fracture and cognitive ability in elderly patients indicates that preexisting cognition disorders and incident cognitive impairment while hospitalized foster poor functional patient outcomes. Data were obtained from 674 community-dwelling patients 65 years of age and older.

Falls documentation in nursing homes: agreement between the minimum data set and chart abstractions of medical and nursing documentation

Article Abstract:

A analysis of data from a longitudinal study on assessing the agreement between falls as recorded in the Minimum Data Set (MDS) and falls events abstracted from chart documentation of elderly nursing home (NH) residents is presented. From the analysis it can be concluded that a careful review of residents medical records for falls documentation is a must.
