Functional status before hospitalization in acutely ill older adults: validity and clinical importance of retrospective reports

Article Abstract:

This article examines the correlation between preexisting health conditions 2 weeks before hospital admission and at the time of admission in acutely ill older adults. Data show that patients' dependency on help in activities of daily living before hospital admission is a strong predictor of acute illness.

Risk of hip fracture in disabled community-living older adults

Article Abstract:

It has been found that the rate of hip fracture in an older cohort of disabled community-living adults was similar to that in nursing home cohorts. Risk of such fractures has been investigated in disabled community-living older adults via a prospective cohort study, 1990-1997. White race, older age, ability to transfer independently, and cognitive impairment were independent predictors of hip fracture.
