Health and functioning among the elderly of Marin County, California: a glimpse of the future

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the health status and mortality rate of the elderly residents of Marin County, CA, belonging to various socioeconomic categories indicates that those with higher socioeconomic status possess reduced mortality rates. Health status is independent of socioeconomics among these residents, who exhibit reduced depression and good memory compared to the rest of the population. These findings suggest that the people belonging to the higher strata of society in this region require medical care for a longer duration.

Relationship between the response to influenza vaccination and the nutritional status in institutionalized elderly subjects

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that nutritional status could have an impact on the response of elderly subjects to influenza vaccination. Nutritional parameters such as levels of vitamin E, iron, total protein and hemoglobin were substantially lower among those who did not respond to the vaccination than those who did, with the cellular immune response and DHEA level also much lower in the nonresponsive group. Twelve out of twenty-three elderly patients did not respond to the vaccination.

Benzodiazepine use as a cause of cognitive impairment in elderly hospital inpatients

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the influence of benzodiazepine, a psychoactive drug, on the cognitive ability of 418 elderly hospital patients, with the aid of a Mini-Mental State Examination suggests that benzodiazepine induces delirium in these patients. Delirium development is correlated to hypoxia and age and the major risk factors for delirium are urinary retention, dehydration and dysfunctioning of the central nervous system.
