Untying the Restraints

Article Abstract:

Whole life insurance policies have ceased to be the core of the life insurance industry. Poor rates of return and limited protection from inflation have caused the consumer to concentrate on term products, annuities, and other interest sensitive products. The State of Virginia recognizes the need for expanded financial options by insurance companies in an effort to increase rates of return. Virginia has passed new laws enabling insurers to participate in joint ventures including those with non-insurers. Insurance companies may now write exchange-traded, covered call options. The new law makes distinctions between investments made with reserves and those made with excess capital. Purchasable common stocks were redefined. Virginia is concerned about insurer stability and knew that a rewriting of insurance investment laws was required to assure this stability.

We brake for monsters

Article Abstract:

The legend of Champ, the sea monster said to inhabit Lake Champlain, has persisted since the 19th century, when it was first spotted. There is a photo of the creature taken in 1977 and most people living near the lake, on the Vermont-New York State border, seem to believe it exists.
