Relationships between nutritional markers and the mini-nutritional assessment in 155 older persons

Article Abstract:

The relationship between nutritional status as measured by a comprehensive nutritional assessment, including nutritional biological markers, anthropometric measurements, evaluation of dietary intake, and the Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) nutrition screening tool has been studied in 155 older people. It was found that the MNA is a practical noninvasive and cost-effective instrument that makes possible quick nutritional evaluation and effective intervention in older people who are frail.

Ability of fat and fat-free mass percentages to predict functional disability in older men and women

Article Abstract:

A cross-sectional and prospective study involving 1,051 subjects aged 55-92 has been carried out to look at the relation between functional disability and percentage of fat mass (FM) and percentage of fat-free mass (FFM) in older men and women. It was concluded that a higher percentage of fat mass and lower percentage of FFM are associated with greater functional disability in older men and women.

Improvement of weight and fat-free mass with oral nutritional supplementation in patient with Alzheimer's disease at risk of malnutrition: a prospective randomized study

Article Abstract:

The effects of oral nutritional supplements (OS) on body weight, body composition, nutritional status, and cognition in elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) are investigated using a prospective, randomized and controlled study. It was observed that regular courses of OS may help to maintain the increase in fat-free mass and improve the nutritional status of the patients.
