Long-term dietary restriction in older-aged rhesus monkeys: effects on insulin resistance

Article Abstract:

The influence of insulin resistance on the positive antidiabetogenic effects of reduced calorie intake in rhesus monkeys is investigated. The results showed that in vivo insulin action was higher in dietary-restricted rhesus monkeys than in libitum-fed nondiabetic group. It is concluded that insulin resistance in older rhesus monkeys can be mitigated through long-term dietary restriction.

Commentary on "Effect of Long-term Caloric Restriction on GLUT4, Phosphatidylinositol-3 Kinase p85 Subunit, and Insulin Receptor Substrate-1 Protein Levels in Rhesus Monkey Skeletal Muscle"

Article Abstract:

Caloric restriction does not appear to alter levels of intracellular signaling molecules but it may alter some other process such as protein phosphorylation. Caloric restriction prolongs life in many animals and was also shown to increase insulin sensitivity in Rhesus monkeys.

The relationships of animal age and caloric intake to cellular replication in vivo and in vitro: a review

Article Abstract:

Issues discussed concern the impact of animal age and diet on in vivo and in vitro cell replication and survival. Topics addressed include biomarkers of aging, and the effect of long-term caloric restriction on telomere shortening, oxidative damage, and hormone changes.
