Mailed reminders for area-wide influenza imunization: a randomized controlled trial

Article Abstract:

Reminders in the mail may serve to slightly increase the rate of free influenza immunization among the elderly. Researchers in Indiana found postal reminders effective in county-wide populations over 65 years old. After receiving a follow-up reminder to the original immunization notification, 81% of the people were immunized. In contrast, only 78% of those without a mailed reminder received immunizations. Mailings may also become effective in other areas of preventive medicine, such as mammography services.

A managed care organization's attempt to increase influenza and pneumococcal immunizations for older adults in an acute care setting

Article Abstract:

Attempts by managed care organizations to increase the rate of influenza and pneumococcal immunizations among older hospital patients may be difficult. Faxed requests to the 106 attending physicians of 153 hospital patients to immunize before discharge resulted in a total of four immunizations. Policy directives to the hospital rather than the physician may be more promising.
