Mortality, health services use, and health behavior in a cohort of well older adults

Article Abstract:

Older people who believe themselves in good health may use health services to the same extent as people with worse health. According to a health behavior survey among 1,867 older members of a health maintenance organization, there was no difference in the last year of life in terms of care utilization or medical cost between the lower and higher score groups. Mortality rates, however, were lowest in the group with the highest health behavior ratings.

Recognition of dementia: discovering the silent epidemic

Article Abstract:

Most physicians who see older patients admit they have missed dementia. This is reflective of medical journals that report under-recognition of dementia. Recent papers confirm that dementia in clinical practice remains the silent epidemic. Patients with dementia cannot be relied to report symptoms. One way of recognizing dementia is their behaviors. These individuals are more likely to get into automobile accidents and other types of accidents.
