Effect of aging on the relationship between multiple risk factors and waist circumference

Article Abstract:

The effect of aging on the relationship between waist circumference and multiple risk factors has been investigated in a cross-sectional study of subjects in a longitudinal study with the finding that the waist circumference cutpoints proposed by The National Heart Lung and Blood Inst. (NHLBI) and The World Health Organization (WHO) standards are useful for prediction of cardiovascular disease risk factors in older and in younger people. Significant adverse effects of age were seen on all risk factors except fasting insulin and homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA(sub.IR)) in all people, diastolic blood pressure in women, and total cholesterol in men.

Nutrition-related cardiovascular risk factors in older people: results from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Article Abstract:

Cross-sectional analysis of adults, all older than 64, participating in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) has been carried out to estimate the number of older persons in the US who have one or more cardiovascular risk factors, for which nutritional therapy is recommended. It was found that almost 90% of Americans in this age group have one of more nutrition-related cardiovascular risk factors. Especially for blacks, improved nutritional interventions may be valuable.

Lead toxicity in older adults

Article Abstract:

Lead toxicity as it relates to older adults is discussed. Lead, even at low levels, in relative terms, can harm the elderly as well as others. The elderly may have been exposed to lead in work or in other ways over most of a lifetime. Blood and bone lead levels, it is beginning to appear, are associated with hypertension, renal insufficiency and cognitive impairment, even when exposures are relatively modest. Medical treatments to slow rate of bone resorption may keep lead in bones. Chart shows pathways of lead from environment to humans and occupations with risk of lead exposure are listed.
