Association of Alzheimer's disease and smoking: the case for sibling controls

Article Abstract:

The case for sibling controls in study of association of Alzheimer's disease and smoking is considered. No significant association was found between smoking and cognitive status in a study of association of cigarette smoking and Alzheimer's disease and analyses based on comparison of those with the disease and unaffected siblings suggest smoking does not decrease the risk.

On the use of surrogate respondents for controls in a case-control study of Alzheimer's disease

Article Abstract:

An assessment of Alzheimer's disease case-study research found that using surrogate respondents in the role of healthy controls does not produce increased levels of bias from systematic over- or under-reporting. Surrogates in the assessment are defined as the healthy friends or relatives of controls.

Smoking and mortality in an older Chinese cohort

Article Abstract:

The relationship of smoking with mortality has been studied in an older Chinese cohort with 2030 subjects older than 69 using a 3-year population-based prospective study in Hong Kong. The study showed an impact on health in later life especially in women. Ceasing to smoke, especially in older men, should be good for cutting down mortality and should be started as early as possible for women especially.
