Ambulatory geriatric clinical care and services

Article Abstract:

Ambulatory geriatric clinical care and services have been considered, and positions and rationales are presented. As the older adult population grows, community-based health services for older adults are becoming attractive from the economic standpoint. They are critical components of the continuum of care for many health systems. Specialized ambulatory clinical service centers for older adults, of senior clinics are being developed and marketed, but vary widely. Seven critical components are discussed.

Subsystems contributing to the decline in ability to walk: bridging the gap between epidemiology and geriatric practice in the InCHIANTI study

Article Abstract:

A population-based study has been carried out in 1,453 persons to identify measures that clinicians can use to undertand causes of walking difficulties in the elderly. Multiple physiologic subsystems can be factors in ability to walk. No standard criteria have been developed to establish whether the subsystems are functioning in a normal range. The InCHIANTI study is intended to bridge the gap between epidemiology and geriatric practice.

Celiac disease in older people

Article Abstract:

The classical textbook presentation of celiac disease with a malabsorption syndrome and a flat jejunal mucosa is not the only one and often the diagnosis is delayed/missed because symptoms may be subtle and often are nonintestinal. Nonspecific symptoms and nutritional deficiencies are especially common in older patients. Use of serological screening tests has improved ease of detection where classical symptoms are lacking.
