The Massachusetts Bank Reporting Project: an edge against elder financial exploitation

Article Abstract:

The Massachusetts Bank Reporting Project is a joint partnership between the state's banking industry and the state government, designed to prevent elder financial exploitation. Some 69% of member banks of the Massachusetts Bankers Association joined the project in its first six months and around 1,000 employees were given training in aspects such as confidentiality, customer relations, liability and security. The aim of the project, to prevent elder exploitation by education of consumers and employees, has been successful and there has been increased incidence of exploitation reporting by bank personnel.

National law enforcement programs to prevent, detect, investigate, and prosecute elder abuse and neglect in health care facilities

Article Abstract:

The US Congress ordered the establishment of state Medicaid Fraud Control Units in 1997 in response to discoveries of abuse, neglect, mistreatment and financial exploitation of the elderly and vulnerable adults by health care providers. The units are tasked with investigating and prosecuting patient abuse and neglect as well as provider fraud. The findings are presented of a survey of 47 offices of attorneys general examining the extent of law enforcement efforts intended to curb elder case abuse and neglect in health care facilities.
