Underutilization of aspirin in older patients with prior myocardial infarction at the time of admission to a nursing home

Article Abstract:

Nursing home patients with a history of heart attack may be undertreated with aspirin as prophylaxis against heart attack and stroke. A researcher examined medications used by 350 patients with a history of myocardial infarction and no contraindications to aspirin therapy upon admission to a nursing home. Only 17% of patients were taking aspirin. The American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and American College of Chest Physicians recommend daily aspirin for the prevention of a second heart attack or other thrombotic events.

Underutilization of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors in older patients with Q-wave anterior myocardial infarction in an academic hospital-based geriatrics practice

Article Abstract:

Many older patients with a history of heart attack and evidence of heart failure are not receiving ACE inhibitors. In a study of 161 men and women 65 years or older who had had a heart attack and had no contraindications to ACE inhibitors, only 35% were taking an ACE inhibitor. Of those with documented heart failure, about two-thirds were taking an ACE inhibitor. But among the 15 with asymptomatic heart failure, only four were taking an ACE inhibitor.

Underutilization of measurement of serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and of lipid-lowering therapy in older patients with manifest atherosclerotic disease

Article Abstract:

A study has been made on how much measurement of serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and appropriate lipid-lowering therapy is underutilized in elderly patients with evident atherosclerotic disease. In an academic hospital-based geriatrics practice an analysis of charts found that these measures were not adequately used in these older patients.
