VRE, MRSA, PRP, and DRGNB in LTCF: lessons to be learned from this alphabet

Article Abstract:

There is much that nursing home staff can do to prevent the widespread development of drug-resistant bacteria in nursing homes. A 1998 study documented the existence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci in nursing homes. However, other drug-resistant organisms have been isolated from nursing home residents. Antibiotics should only be given if there is clear benefit from their use and they should be used only for standard treatment periods.

Five-year survival of older people with anemia: variation with hemoglobin concentration

Article Abstract:

Research on nursing home residents indicates that low hemoglobin concentration is a valid predictor of early death. Advanced carcinomas were also observed in anemic subjects during autopsy. Data were obtained from a 60-month-long study of 63 elderly subjects who possessed low hemoglobin levels.
