1996-97 trends in opposition to comprehensive sexuality education in public schools in the United States

Article Abstract:

The US government showed unprecedented support for abstinence-only sexuality education during 1996-97, while educators maintained their support for HIV prevention and comprehensive sexuality education programs. The government is funding programs to teach young people monogamy is an expected standard while sexual activity outside marriage causes physical and psychological damage. The programs do not allow information to be given on STD or pregnancy prevention. Parents in Massachusetts are able to take their children out of sexuality education classes under a new law. The SIECUS Advocacy Project analyzes these trends.

MISH publishes new framework for fear-based, abstinence-only education

Article Abstract:

The Medical Institute for Sexual Health (MISH) has published a guide for developing fear-based, abstinence-only programs. The framework, which is entitled 'National Guidelines for Sexuality and Character Education,' contains messages which are similar to the Sexual Information and Education Council of the United States' (SIECUS) guidelines. However, the two guidelines also exhibit points of disagreement. The MISH framework promotes abstinence as the only moral choice before marriage. The SIECUS guidelines, on the other hand, help young people understand a positive view of sexuality.

It has adopted various strategies to attack the structure and basis of the sexuality education program. While it has been unsuccessful in promoting its full curriculum, federal policy has granted finance and approval to its programs. The opposition included parents of a rightist orientation, while the supporters for the comprehensive program were the mainstream parents and community members.
