ABA President urges China to grant dissident legal rights
Article Abstract:
In Nov 1992 ABA President J. Michael McWilliams wrote a formal letter to San Li He of the Ministry of Justice in the People's Republic of China protesting the violation of Wang Juntao's legal rights. Wang was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment in Feb 1991 on charges of sedition and counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement stemming from activities during the Tienanmen Square protest in 1989. Wang has been denied the right to redress for his treatment in Yangging prison. McWilliams' letter stresses the ABA's concern with denial of the rule of law and requests the government release Wang's legal papers.

National Equal Justice Library underway
Article Abstract:
A consortium comprising the ABA, the American Assn of Law Libraries and the National Legal Aid and Defender Assn plans to open the National Equal Justice Library. The library will be located on the campus of the American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C. The library will contain published and unpublished materials as well as oral histories on the history of legal representation of the poor throughout the world. All material will be cataloged in a computerized system, and many of the holdings will be made available through computer and telecommunications links.

Lack of hate crimes coverage slammed
Article Abstract:
A letter from the ABA's Governmental Affairs Office has been sent to the State Department criticizing the coverage of gay and lesbian issues in its 1991 Country Reports. The letter cites numerous omissions including recognition of lesbian marriage in Swaziland and the first Symposium on the Rights of Lesbians and Gay Men in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Failure to mention harassment of gay and lesbian rights organizations in Mexico and Argentina was also criticized. The letter did commend the Department on its increased attention to rights of those infected with HIV.
