Black power/white law: the author of a new book chronicles one man's struggle for freedom

Article Abstract:

Law professor Lori Andrews' new book "Black Power/White Blood" focused on the life and rebirth of Johnny Spain, but it also details the efforts of prisoners' rights attorneys that would not give up on Spain. Spain was convicted of conspiracy in the San Quentin Six trial of 1975-1976. Appeals based on juror misconduct and Spain's appearance in chains did not work, but the attorneys were eventually able to prove that his membership in the Black Panther party was the basis for his sentence. Spain reformed himself in prison and lectures and works with prisoners' rights organizations.

The greening of America: phase two

Article Abstract:

Yale Law School Professor, social revisionist and author of 'The Greening of America' Charles A. Reich comments on his view that spiritual and physical deprivation is damaging our society. Reich compares environmental pollution to the system's exploitation and devaluation of the individual, leading to high crime, tolerance of homelessness and overall poor quality of life for every American. Reich believes that the concept of individual rights should include things which make people happy and healthy, and endorses a constitutional right to beauty.

There is no sisterhood: non-white women lawyers say they're still at the bottom of the heap

Article Abstract:

Laurel Bellows, new president of ABA's Women in the Profession Commission, worked on the report regarding minority women attorneys with the help of the Opportunities for Minorities in the Profession Commission. The report found that white women and minority men attorneys do not support minority women attorneys, delegating them to narrow areas of law. Minority women attorneys lack role models, face both sex and race discrimination, and have difficulty establishing networks.
