Cynicism in the workplace: some causes and effects

Article Abstract:

A study evaluated the causes and effects of distrust in business organizations. A scenario-based experiment was used involving 207 administrative and professional employees. Independent variables of executive compensation, organizational performance and workforce reduction strategy and a sole dependent variable cynicism was used in the analysis. The results reveal that a high executive compensation, poor organizational performance and harsh announcement of employee layoffs contributed largely to high employee cynicism.

The proactive component of organizational behavior: a measure and correlates

Article Abstract:

A scale to measure the proactive component of organizational change was constructed. Three studies were conducted to test this new scale. There were 282 upper-level undergraduates in the first study, 130 business students in th second and 134 MBA students in the last study. Results indicate that the measure is internally valid and has reasonable reliability based on test-retest measures. It has significant criterion validity and is operationalized in a self-report scale.
