Do we need mechanisms in the social sciences?

Article Abstract:

Social sciences and philosophy of the social sciences focuses on mechanisms as a central analytical unit according to a recent movement in the social sciences. It is argued that there are a number of important aims to which knowledge about mechanisms contributes not much and the investigative mechanisms is a methodological strategy with fairly limited applicability.

Mechanisms in the analysis of social macro-phenomena

The conceptual issues regarding the term 'social mechanism', frequently used in social science literature are addressed. The term is used to refer to recurrent processes generating a specific kind of outcome and in the casual reconstruction of social macro phenomenon.

The mechanisms of emergence

The emergence in social systems is focused. A new tool to explore the mechanisms of social emergence: multi agent-based computer simulation is proposed.
