Economic analyses of Industrial Research Institutes in developing countries: the Indian experience

Article Abstract:

India's Industrial Research Institutes (IRIs) have been registering limited but considerable improvements in their performance, according to regression evaluations of data culled from three of the concerned IRIs. The tests were prompted by concerns over government economic policy reforms. Despite the concerns, the first IRI has managed to increase its earned profits way past its outlays while the second IRI has been increasingly involved with sponsored projects. Meanwhile, the third IRI has efficiently enticed more client firms as it increased overall sales.

Patenting of recombinant proteins: an analysis of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) in Europe, the United States and Japan

Article Abstract:

Cases on the patenting of the tissue-plasminogen activator (t-PA) in the UK, US and Japan are analyzed. Patent validity was the main focus in the case between Genentech and Wellcome in the UK while Genentech sued both Wellcome and Genetics Institute in the US and the company Toyobo in Japan for patent infringement. It is shown that the upholding of biotechnology patents with broad claims hinders the development of modified variants which may have significant pharmacological properties.

The publication output and impact of academic chemistry research in the Netherlands during the 1980s: bibliometric analyses and policy implications

Article Abstract:

The scientific journal is the most important medium of communication among scientists who participated in working groups of the Netherlands Foundation for Chemical Research in 1980-1991. The Science Citation Index (SCI) also makes excellent coverage of the Dutch academic output in journals. This implies that the SCI properly monitors research performance. However, it may give only a partial view on the scientific results of applied fields.
