Embodied political performativity in Excitable Speech: Butler's psychoanalytic revision of historicism

Article Abstract:

Judith Butler's 'Excitable Speech: A Politics of the Performative', which focuses primarily on her use of speech-act theory for political purposes, is analyzed. Her work moves beyond the criticisms of psychoanalysis in historicism and feminist theory to assess the contributions psychoanalysis makes to theorize a politically effective subject of history.
