Foreign direct investment and state export performance

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the relationship between the US manufacturing export performance and foreign direct investment (FDI) in manufacturing industries from 1980 to 1991. A model was designed using the state export levels as functions of the state levels of FDI plus other variables. The result showed that increased levels of FDI which are related to improved productivity and global competitiveness of US manufacturing firms may result to an increase in export activity. The study also showed the need for further research on FDI-related export impacts that hasten regional economic and employment growth in the macro-regional level.

The agroindustry: a neglected aspect of the location theory of manufacturing

Article Abstract:

A systematic approach model integrating some inputs from von Thunen's production location proposition was used to describe the location behavior of an agroindustrial firm. The result showed that the location behavior of an agroindustrial firm differs very much from its non-agroindustrial counterparts. Agroindustrial firms, whether they are price-takers or monopolists, do not minimize transportation costs when the production function is linearly homogenous and the cost of shipping products is high.

What attracts foreign multinational corporations? Evidence from branch plant location in the United States

Article Abstract:

The factors affecting location choice for foreign direct investments, specifically manufacturing plants in the United States are investigated. Results show that the market size, manufacturing wage rate, transportation infrastructure and state incentives relate positively in foreign multinational companies (FMNCs) choice for a location for manufacturing plants. The effect of land area, unionization, taxes and the unemployment rate are not consistent for all FMNCs.
