Income and gender inequalities in Asia: testing alternative theories of development

Article Abstract:

Economic development in Third World countries is characterized by dependency theorists as increasing income inequalities followed by high growth rates. Followers of Simon Kuznets and sociologists state that inequality increases in the early stages of development and decreases as development advances. Empirical work on women in development belong to the dependency school. Gender and income inequalities are addressed and an investigation is done to determine whether income growth and structural transformation have improved the status of Third World women.

The contribution of small enterprises to household and national income in Kenya

Article Abstract:

Small enterprises or businesses make significant contributions to Kenya's gross domestic product. Although small enterprises usually generate low returns, they constitute 12% to 14% of the nation's GDP. While no significant differences in profitability exist between urban and rural enterprises, businesses owned by men are associated with higher profit margins than those owned by women.
