Make and buy in innovation strategies: evidence from Belgian manufacturing firms

Article Abstract:

The features of the innovation approach of manufacturing companies was investigated. The relationship between the innovation approach and industry-, company- and innovation-specific features was analyzed utilizing Belgian firm information from the Eurostat Community Innovation Survey. Results showed that size effects affect innovation and that high apparent risks, expenses and low appropriability of innovations do not depress innovation but rather affect the choice of innovation sourcing strategy.

Of life cycles real and imaginary: the unexpectedly long old age of optical lithography

Article Abstract:

The belief that the limits of a technology are dependent on the physics and structure of the dominant design is disproven using the development of optical photolithographic alignment technology. It is shown that the natural limits of the technology were overcome by developments in component and compatible technologies and changes in user demands. Thus, both the social impact and dynamics of a technology are essential to understanding technological change.

Is your firm a creative destroyer? Competitive learning and knowledge flows in the technological strategies of firms

Article Abstract:

The N- and S-learning technological strategies of companies are analyzed using Boisot's culture space. The neoclassical or N-learning strategy involves the hoarding of technological assets by firms to prevent the equilibrium of market forces. The Schumpetarian or S-learning strategy requires the selective diffusion of technological assets away from market equilibrium towards new opportunities.
