Modes of experimentation: an innovation process - and competitive - variable

Article Abstract:

The incorporation of advanced methods such as those of computer simulation and combinatorial chemistry has been crucial in making problem-solving tasks and other research development processes efficient. Experimentation strategies of firms are now changing in terms of the time and manner through which they can be executed. Furthermore, novel experimental methods are expected to determine the competitive position of the firm if the benefits of the novel methods would be difficult to acquire or duplicate in factor markets.

How learning by doing is done: problem identification in novel process equipment

Article Abstract:

The process of 'learning by doing' is considered via an empirical study of 27 problems that came up during the first years of using two process machines. The investigation focused on exploring causes for the a posteriori nature of problem identification. Besides this, tests of reasons are conducted to demonstrate the inseparability of 'doing' from 'learning by doing.' Overall, the study showed that the unit cost of manufactured goods drop substantially with increasing lot sizes.

Satisfying heterogeneous user needs via innovation toolkits: the case of Apache security software

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness of the solution to enable users to modify products on their own using 'innovation toolkits' in the Apache security software is explored. This will be useful in many markets characterized by heterogeneous demand.
