NASA, ozone, and policy-relevant science

Article Abstract:

The issue of 'readiness of knowledge' for policy decision has become of particular significance in light of the emergence of a more environmentally-conscious society. Ozone policy is a clear example of how science is prematurely introduced into policy deliberations long before it is ready. Three significant variables should be considered when using technical data in environmental regulation: the degree of the new information's threat to the status quo, the level of scientific uncertainty and participation of legislators and the public in decisionmaking.

Policy for science for policy: a commentary on Lambright on ozone depletion and acid rain

Article Abstract:

Environmental researchers and regulators must be able to adopt a highly-reliable health policy process in order to address the recent problems regarding policy making and evaluation. This was the conclusion was derived from a review conducted on W.H. Lambright's study on ozone depletion and acid rain. Results suggest that by adopting the so-called policy-for-science-for-policy, federal officials and experts may be able to assess environmental problems effectively and accurately without creating differences between them.

Reforming Romania's national research system

Article Abstract:

Romania encountered problems in its attempts to reform its national research system following the collapse of the Ceausescu-era science policy regime. Science and technology policy focused primarily on applied research and discouraged academic and fundamental work in that period. The country's transition to an innovation-based market economy depends on how government will improve the organization, financing and management of its national research system.
