Hospital Profit Planning Under Medicare Reimbursement

Article Abstract:

A model is developed that captures the Medicare regulatory environment for hospitals. It models the hospital's income statement as related to patients from whom full payments are received and those for whom the hospital receives a pro rata share from Medicare's trust fund. Hospitals are forced to shift financial burdens to private patients. A nonlinear programming model of pricing and cost allocation is developed. Tables illustrate numerical results.

Okinawa: The battle, the bomb, and the camera

Article Abstract:

The Battle of Okinawa, which ran from April 1 to June 30 of 1945, is receiving scholarly attention for its human tragedy, its inherent military interest, and for its influence on President Harry S. Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. The human costs of the struggle on Okinawa were documented by combat photographers of the US Army's Signal Corps that provided images of the actual losses suffered by infantry units in early 1945.
