Political economy of rice price protection in Asia

Article Abstract:

Asian countries have protected their local rice markets from unstable international prices and foreign exchange rates. The reason behind this policy is the centrality of rice in the Asian diet. Rice cultivation also provides a chief source of income for farmers. Cost-effective measures such as rice technology and price subsidy of farm inputs have reduced rice prices. However, Asian countries must shift from rice-centered production to high-priced agricultural products.

Genetically modified rice, yields, and pesticides: assessing farm-level productivity effects in China

Article Abstract:

The effects of China's use of genetically modified (GM) rice on pesticide use and rice yields are studied. Labor inputs and pesticide use decreased, but yields did not show any significant increase. Commercialization of GM rice in China could lead to industrial countries commercializing other GM food products and other developing countries developing their plant biotechnology programs.
