Psychometric equivalence of a translated circadian rhythm questionnaire: implications for between- and within-population assessments

Article Abstract:

The fidelity of an English-to-Japanese translation of a circadian rhythm questionnaire was examined through simultaneous factor analysis in several populations (Joreskog, 1971a). Results indicate significant differences in item responses between populations, although between-population convergence was obtained on one factor. Back translations revealed both major and minor content discrepancies between the original and translated scales, which preclude clearly separating linguistic or semantic and population differences in item responses. Within-population results based on classic measurement techniques were compared with results based on structural equation techniques (in the American sample only); each technique led to different data-based conclusions. On the basis of the structural equation results, refinements in the source (English) scale items are suggested. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Examination of the measurement properties of the job descriptive index with experimental items

Article Abstract:

The psychometric properties of the Job Descriptive Index (JDI; Smith, Kendall, & Hulin, 1969), supplemented by a pool of experimental items, was examined. Significant improvements in the measurement properties of the JDI scales were obtained. Replacement items chosen will most likely improve the measurement generality of the JDI. Few differences across different theory-based methods used for evaluating items were found. Results are discussed in the framework of the need for frequent updating of psychological measures and the unending process of test construction and validation. Possible replacement items for selected original items are presented. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Psychometric equivalence of a translation of the job descriptive index into Hebrew

Article Abstract:

The study examines the fidelity with which the Job Descriptive Index, a job satisfaction scale, was translated from English into Hebrew to determine if biases can be ingrained in translation. The research determined that 21 of 66 items tested proved to be biased. The causes of such bias can be viewed both culturally and linguistically. The biases have implications for cross-language scale evaluations.
