Reply to the comment on Rati Ram's test of the Kuznets hypothesis

Article Abstract:

Martin Ravallion's contention that the Ram test that uses regression has little or no power for rejecting the Kuznets hypothesis is invalid because it did not give due consideration to the two main points raised in the original article. This is because even in Ravallion's example, both unconstrained and constrained models show a relatively similar inverted-U structure and the generality of the pattern contained in the comment for Ram's constrained model is refuted by the examples given in Ram's reply.

Agricultural income, cash crops, and inequality in rural Pakistan

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on rural income inequality using a three-year panel data set from Pakistan. Income decomposition techniques and Cobb-Douglas production functions were used. Results showed that agricultural income was the major contributor of overall income inequality among the five sources of rural income. It was also suggested that Pakistan deemphasize on sugarcane production and instead focus on improving technologies for main food and livestock crops.

The determinants of farm investment and residential construction in post-reform China

Article Abstract:

The relation of tenure security, farm size and credit availability to farmers' agricultural investment in China is analyzed. Results show that the size of the farm could significantly influence the amount of investment and land productivity due to the indivisibility of capital. However, extremely small farms produce higher capital stock than expected due to this indivisibility.
