Rules of access and shifts in demand: a comparison of log-linear and two-sided logit models

Article Abstract:

A comparison of the two-sided logit (TSL) and extended log-linear models reveals that the TSL parameters determining the allocation of cases to categorical outcomes are derived from a model of rules of access. While the log-linear models are supposed to be free of demand effects, their interaction parameters alter with simple changes in the demand level. In order to be free from the effect of demand shifts, demand and supply need to influence their effects through multiplicative reallocation. As such, these models cannot study the rules of access as defined by the TSL model.

Critiquing the critics: An approach for the comparative evaluation of critical schemas

Article Abstract:

An approach that consists of comparative evaluation of critical schemas is presented for critiquing the critics and for analyzing the film reviews appearing in Variety and the New York Times between 1946 and 1982. The application of this approach for analyzing films shows that the films belonging to the simple and complex genres experience more commercial and artistic success as compared to the films belonging to the unpartitioned and robust schemas.

The labor-market effects of an anti-poverty program: Results from hierarchical linear modeling

Article Abstract:

The impact of random assignment into an anti-poverty program, called New Hope, on earnings is determined by using the Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) technique. The results indicate that the policy could lead to an increase in the earnings but the earnings may not continue to increase over time and may not be able to lift the families out of poverty.
