Self-in-a-vat: On John Searle's ontology of reasons for acting

Article Abstract:

John Searle has developed a theory of reasons for acting that intends to rescue the freedom of the will, endangered by casual determination, whether physical or psychological. Given the fact that mental states are nothing but physical, Searle's criticism for free will, namely, its independence from brain processes that embody it, sounds dualistic.
