Shaping cyberspace - interpreting and transforming the Internet

Article Abstract:

A study investigated the Internet from its beginnings to its metamorphosis into a pervasive international commercial information network in the late 1990s. It is argued that the different stages of development of the Internet were not inevitable because there were, in fact, alternatives which were abandoned or forgotten. The analysis raises the critical issue of how far the Internet can continue to grant increased access for large numbers of people to information/communication services it is primarily being shaped by entities that desire to transform it into a transaction medium.

Uncharitable view

Article Abstract:

Employees who choose not to participate in company fund-raisers are acting ethically if they base their decisions on principle. Private giving, while it may seem good on the surface, can undermine democracy. On another subject, a boy should not be discouraged to ask a girl out despite the rules he thinks her parents have imposed on her.
