Spatial distribution of production and international trade: a note

Article Abstract:

A monopolistic competition model is used to analyze the formation and location of cities in the perspective of urban societies. In this context, the analysis focuses on the spatial distribution of cities with their relative positions within the country. In analyzing the spatial dimension, two types of centrifugal forces, namely one global and another local, are allowed. The global one is represented by the existence of two adjacent foreign countries, while the local centrifugal force is due to the existence of commuting cost/land rent.

Land-use allocation in the absence of complete market values

Article Abstract:

An innovative land allocation method is devised that surmounts the limitations posed by the conventional cost-benefit evaluation and 'best-use' methods. The land allocation model uses the von Thunen tradition of location analysis employed in Geographic Information Systems, and values the land according to the commercial rent gradient formed to determine the scarcity of the land and how to optimize its use. This is done using suitability scores and land allocation is determined by overlaying such suitability scores.

Launhardt on Von Thunen's rings; a note

Article Abstract:

Wilhelm Launhardt was a mathematical economics specialist who contributed immensely to the study of marginal cost pricing, the law of market areas, industrial location and the bird-rent function. He also developed analytical bases for ring formation and the impact of demand, transportation rates and productivity on land use. Launhardt is credited for anticipating concentric space price equilibrium in his land use models.
