Technological internationalization in the electro-technical industry: a cross-company comparison of patenting patterns 1986-2000

Article Abstract:

The patent data analysis method is used to examine the R & D internationalization of two multinationals, GE and ABB. An overwhelming majority of both companies' R & D efforts is concentrated in Western Europe and North America. The locational overlap between the two companies is negligible. The analysis highlights the facts that little evidence is available to suggest that production of technology is globalised in a general sense and that the industry's global lead location plays a very limited role in foreign R & D investments.
