The economic effects of the Sri Lankan civil war

Article Abstract:

The economic effects of the Sri Lankan civil war and the costs of the continuation of this conflict were analyzed. This was undertaken to determine the relationship between defense spending and economic growth in less developed countries. The findings show that Sri Lanka adopted cutbacks in nonmilitary government spending and large reductions in investment to shoulder the costs of the civil war. The estimated opportunity cost of the war during 1983-88 is equivalent to 20% of the 1988 gross domestic product and it is predicted to increase dramatically in the event the war continues.

Solidarity networks in preindustrial societies: rational peasants with a moral economy

Article Abstract:

The moral economy of preindustrial communities is analyzed. Results show that a mutual insurance rationale is the basis for solidarity netwroks prevalent among such communities. Precapitalist communities seem to view cooperation as a moral obligation and subsistence a right. This indicates that there is no contradiction between the idea of a moral economy and the conscious right to subsistence.
