The impact of technology characteristics and job control on worker mental health

Article Abstract:

A study examined the effects of uncertainty and abstractness in advanced manufacturing technology on workers' psychological strain. The study showed that timing and method controls can reduce the impact of uncertainty and abstractness on workers' mental health. A relationship model was developed using traction-distraction and passivity-challenge processes. Further research was suggested relative to the complexity of the statistical model used and small size of the sample.

Should the subjective be the objective? On studying mental processes, coping behavior, and actual exposures in organizational stress research

Article Abstract:

The role played by objective job exposures in determining stress-related work experiences has drawn the attention of researchers, particularly those specializing in the human resources management field. Compared to mental attributes, objective job exposures must be given more emphasis since they offer a more efficient means of improving workplace efficiency. Focusing on objective traits provides employees with more opportunities for enhancing theory building processes.

Further evidence on some new measures of job control, cognitive demand and production responsibility

Article Abstract:

New manufacturing technologies have called for new measures on job design and job stress. Jackson, Wall, Martin and Davids have developed new standards of timing control, method control, monitoring demand, problem-solving demand and production responsibility. Evidence supporting these measures are presented using the results gathered from about 1,700 employees from five different samples.
