The poverty of Randall Collins's formal sociology of philosophy

Article Abstract:

Criticisms are raised concerning Randall Collins' 'The Sociology of Philosophies,' which argues that intellectual change is made up of networks such as pupils and masters. The primary criticism centers on Collins' assertion that challenge and conflict are necessary for creativity, which ignores the role of cooperation or individual self-sufficiency.
