The role of flexibility in the development of new products: an empirical study

Article Abstract:

An empirical analysis on several design projects proved that design flexibility poses substantial influence on development process, especially under highly uncertain environments. Results of the study revealed that projects that employ flexible design outclassed those which use inflexible design by a factor of 2.2 (in person-months), more than 23% of which is determined by the management of design risks. Designers are capable of tolerating high levels of risks with flexible designs, which led to the reduction of resource investments. The study also cited the Taguchi method as an alternative approach in optimizing design flexibilities.
