U.S-Japanese Competition in High-Technology Fields

Article Abstract:

In the competition for high-technology markets, two different economic and decision-making systems are pitted against each other. U.S. scientific prowess has carried over into high technology, and it tends to leave innovation to the private sector. Japan advances in high technology result from the commercial area, and Japan's MITI has been in the vanguard, promoting an industrial policy. A newly formed group, the Semiconductor Research Corp. is calling for trade reciprocity legislation in which the U.S. would match Japanese trade restrictions. The competition between the two countries has intensified in terms of increased governmental assistance and protectionist measures. Technical and commercial abilities of the private sector will determine the outcome of the competition.

Alternative energy strategies for the United Kingdom revisited: market competition and sustainability

Article Abstract:

The structure of the United Kingdom's (UK) newly competitive energy market and the reason why the mid-1990s total primary energy consumption are aligned with the forecast made by Gerald Leach and his colleagues at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), which broke down the energy market into 400 end-use categories, are relatively different. The weakening of energy prices for all fossil fuels in global markets during the early 1980s and the liberalization of the energy market in the UK led to a decline in energy prices.
